Agriculture is where climate change lands hardest, and where the most practical responses are being built. At the UNIMAC cabbage project site, CEO Ameh Maurice Ngwa recently walked the rows himself, applying approved organic crop protection products alongside the community members his organisation works with. That is the model: not a policy statement, but a field demonstration.

The initiative uses cabbage cultivation as a working platform for four overlapping goals: improving household nutrition, reducing dependence on synthetic chemical inputs, building climate-adaptive agricultural knowledge among women and young people, and generating income from sustainable farming. None of those goals is incidental. They compound.

What is climate-smart agriculture?
Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an approach to farming that simultaneously increases productivity, builds resilience to climate-related shocks, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions where possible. It prioritises soil health, biodiversity, reduced chemical inputs, and locally adapted crop varieties. In practice, it means farmers making choices that protect next season’s harvest as much as this one.

Safer Inputs, Healthier Soil, Better Yields

The conventional farming playbook for pest management has been the same for decades: spray synthetic chemicals, repeat frequently, watch input costs rise and soil biology decline. UNIMAC’s approach replaces that cycle with organic and bio-based alternatives that protect the crop without degrading what the crop grows in.

The products and methods the initiative promotes draw from both traditional practice and contemporary agricultural science, combined in an Integrated Pest Management framework.

Organic & bio-based inputs
Neem oil extract — broad-spectrum, biodegrades quickly
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) — targets caterpillars specifically, harmless to other organisms
Garlic and chilli pepper extracts — natural repellents from existing food crops
Insecticidal soap — effective against soft-bodied pests, no soil residue
Wood ash solutions — readily available, dual-purpose as potassium input
Compost tea — suppresses fungal disease while feeding soil biology
Trichoderma-based biofungicides — combat root rot without chemical fungicides
Liquid seaweed or fish emulsion — micronutrient foliar feed

The goal of IPM is not zero pest pressure — that standard is neither achievable nor necessary. The goal is maintaining pressure below the point where it meaningfully reduces yield, using the least disruptive method that works. That framing changes how farmers relate to the field: from fighting the ecosystem to managing it.

Farming as an Entry Point to Economic Independence

A cabbage plot is a useful agricultural unit. For women and young people with limited access to formal income pathways, a productive plot managed with reliable techniques is also the start of a livelihood.

UNIMAC uses the farming initiative to transfer specific, immediately applicable knowledge to two groups with the most to gain from agricultural skills.

Household food production and management are disproportionately women’s work in most Cameroonian communities. Shifting that work toward sustainable practice reduces their exposure to agrochemical health risks, lowers input costs, and builds knowledge they can teach. A woman who manages an organic cabbage plot has skills that transfer to every other crop she grows.

Young Cameroonians face a persistent gap between formal education and accessible employment. Climate-smart agriculture sits at the intersection of agricultural production and environmental management — a growing sector where practical skills matter more than credentials. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an evidence-based approach to managing crop pests that combines prevention, monitoring, biological controls, and targeted intervention. Unlike calendar-based chemical spraying, IPM applies the minimum necessary intervention at the right moment, reducing input costs, protecting soil biology, and preventing the pesticide resistance that makes chemical-only approaches progressively less effective. UNIMAC promotes IPM because it produces better long-term outcomes for smallholder farmers who cannot absorb the cost of escalating chemical inputs.

What organic pest control options work for cabbage farming in Cameroon?

Cabbage is vulnerable to caterpillar damage (diamondback moth, cabbage looper), aphids, and fungal disease.
